The follow-up must depend on industry or company. My bf's mom interviews all potential candidates at the stock broker firm she works for, and she insists on follow-ups. If someone doesn't follow up after either sending in their application OR after an interview they get moved to the bottom of the list. She said a short and sweet email is fine, but if she doesn't get SOMETHING from a candidate then they're not getting hired there.
Yeah, I'm applying for similar (brokers, banks, accounting, consultancy) and we get told send a follow up email or don't get hired is the basic rule. I'm sure it doesn't stand everywhere but meh, it takes 2 minutes, I don't mind doing it.
