I would hazard a guess that they were impressed with how far up under himself he moves with his hind end - he gets his hind hooves farther forward than his sire or dam. That is desirable in a dressage horse, but of course there's lots more that goes into it (plus, though he moves it forward well there's not a lot of hock). It really stands out to me from the Arabian horse point of view since Arabians have lost so very very much of that hind end movement.
