I definitely wouldn't separate cold turkey. If you can have two people handling them, you could gradually separate for longer periods of time, until they can deal with being apart well enough to be kept apart. I'm thinking gradually leading away and back, and slowly increasing the time. Make things pleasant and positive. I've never dealt with horses that were herdbound to that extreme before, so Spooks probably has some better/more informed ideas. Good luck, and by the way, I am glad they are in good enough health now to be feisty, even if it is a pain in your rear.
