They're fine for walking about but not for much else.

Well, there you go...different riding culture.  I ride a pastured horse, no barn, no covered arena, no lights in stalls.  I need boots that can go from shit mud to stirrup with just a wash-up with a cold hose if needed.  I'm just happy to be in the saddle.
