My friends horse always wears bell boots because she is always stepping on herself and pulling off her shoes, it does seem to help. My daughter has always been a big fan of various boots for her horses but she is a big worrier about things.  I put them on Maggie if we are doing a long or challenging hack and when she goes hunting and stubble fielding with my daughter she wears them.  I do it to protect her legs rather than support them.

Someone on our yard actually lost her horse to a tendon injury that they themselves felt wouldn't have happened if she had been booted up (puncture wound to tendon caused by a sharp flint stone) so that made me think. I wasn't with the horse when it happened so I don't know the hows and whys but it was a devastating experience for everyone involved
