When I kept my horses at home, I couldn't feed everybody over the fence because of the way the place was set up. Instead of running the risk of getting hurt, I took a whip with me to feed. I never had to hit anybody but I did run them off and make them wait until all the feed was distributed and I was clear. It helped that they were all terrified of a whip. Nobody I knew had ever actually touched one of them with it but it worked.

One of those horses, an old gelding named JR cause he's gray (eye roll) would always finish first. That meant that he was free to torment me while I put hay out. Well he miscalculated one day. He dove at me and the hay but didn't realize I still had the feed scoop in my other hand. I warped him on the end of the nose with it. It was a good month before I could lay hands on the old bastard. Didn't hurt my feelings any. If there was ever a horse I hated it would be him. He still lives with my parents. Dad whacks him regularly for diving over food.

I agree that some food aggression issues are best left alone. But if the horse is dangerous, you need to do something about it. If he was aiming to run YOU off his feed, something needs to be done. I suggest a longer whip, a club something to get his attention and make him see that YOU are the boss.

Good luck!!
