I have technically given a horse away. It was a mare who was a little crazy and more than I could handle. I sold her to a friend for $1. We did a bill of sale and everything to legally transfer ownership. It was important to do it the right way (sell her for $1 and get the bill of sale) because she was likely to throw or injure someone and I didn't want to be liable for that. The new owner was a friend who knew exactly what he was getting into and I knew she would have a good home. I had paid $2500 for her just 6 months prior but it was worth it to me to let her go to someone who would take care of her rather than try to sell her to just anyone.

If your friend is giving her away and NOT willing/able to take her back then I don't know that she can put stipulations on the new owner. Has she considered a free/feed lease? That way someone else is paying the bills but she still has control over the horse? If that worked out well and she trusted the lessor then she could give her the horse down the road.
