I'm one that really doesn't give human emotions to animals; I don't believe I know what they're thinking either. Animals are different from us, dogs are different from cats are different from horses, and I try to learn as much as possible about how they communicate with each other, but I don't believe for a minute they process anything the way that we do.

Totally agree with the post regarding the fact that we share our living space with dogs, hence they are more dependent / reliant on us. We cuddle them, hold them, pet them, maybe sleep with them and share our food with them, so it would stand to reason there would be a different bond.

There are probably a small percentage of horses that become somewhat attached to "their" human, and those are probably the ones living in a one or two horse situation, and not being boarded. In a boarding situation, there are a lot of people interacting with the horse every single day. If you have one or two horses at home, they also become attuned to your schedule, make some kind of connection between you and food or whatever.

Selling a horse would probably be most difficult on those horses who are unaccustomed to being in different surroundings. We trailer ours all over the place all the time, take them camping, in and out of different barns. They seem totally content no matter where we are as along as there are other horses; and it doesn't even have to be the horses they are used to living with, just other horses.

My guess is that way more people want to believe that their horse is super attached to them than is probably true. From what I've seen, most (not all) horses appear to view humans are rather interchangeable.
