The readers here have described the process to you. Keep in mind that some horses don't lay down and go to sleep after the first shot to relax them (some vets don't do it this way). Horses will react differently. Some will stay on their feet until the lethal dose, and they'll hit the ground. Hard. it's not graceful, it's not pretty. It's a sight some people won't forget. That's why I chose to wuss-out and left it in the capable hands of the vet assistants, one of which had known my son's gelding all through 4-H, so I didn't leave him in the hands of an uncaring stranger.

Coping suggestion:

Go to the craft store, or even Toys R Us has this, and get a plaster stepping stone kit. And you make one for your mare. Some colored stones the same color as her tack stuff? Maybe stones the color of her coat? Something you'll remember her fondly by. Put the store in your garden or yard, plant a tree?

Have a bracelet made out of her tail. Or send some tail hairs to 'Clay Pony' and have a beautiful vessel made http://www.claypony.com/
