I'm so so sorry - I've only ever had one horse put down, and it was due to a freak accident and I was in no way prepared for it.
Don't feel as if you have to stay, or if you have to go for the process. Just do whatever you're comfortable with. I never saw my mare when she was hurt, only because I was cautioned against it because my parents didn't want me to think to that scene whenever I thought back to her in the future. It was a hard decision, I went back and forth for awhile, torn between saying goodbye and being with her and not wanting that to be my final memory.
The weird thing was that the day before that happened I read an article on some coping methods and rituals before and after putting your horse down.
It said that often people will spoil their horse with lots of love, take them out for walks, and take pictures with them in the weeks/days leading up to. In the few days before, on of the suggestions was braiding their mane in flowers, and moving them to the most open/busiest stall in the barn if they'd enjoy it, so they can get alot of attention and love from other people as well.
After, one of the suggestions was to turn on the radio, so the song playing or a couple after can always be 'your song', and for good reason. The song that was playing when/after my mare was put down was Who You'd Be Today, by Kenny Chesney, which suited the moment so eerily and now is such an important song to me.
Another really common thing to do is cutting off a piece of mane or tail. You can either keep it near you, in a special box maybe by your bedside table, hang it with a picture of your mare, possibly make a bracelet with it, and I've seen pottery with horsehair in it which might be a nice way to remember her. Many people also pick a meaningful place to bury their horse, and/or plant trees in memory, over the grave. I also slept with my mare's blanket for a few days after her death, and I've kept a few things, just small articles of tack, halters, blankets, etc that will never go on another horse again.
It's a good thing to cry and have some time to yourself, but if you drag it on for too ('too' varies from person to person, of course) long it will only be detrimental to your health and wellbeing. I know myself personally fenced myself off from everything for way too long, and after I finally got over that big hump of going out there and being normal again, I was amazed at how well friends and family will make things so much better, especially horsey friends who understand the situation and have maybe been there before.
Just cope however works best for you.
