I couldn't do it. When we put my old show gelding down my Mother was there with the vet. I don't think I could've handled him hitting the ground. I spent two hours with him the night before, we clipped and bathed him. He ate a ton of mints, carrots and apples. Everyone left my daughter and I alone while we did this, it was heartbreaking. My Mom is a non horsey person and to her it wasn't so bad to deal with. My vet is also a family friend and she said she was crying along Mom. We made the decision to have the hole dug after it was over, to him we were just leading him to a nice grassy spot to graze, Mom said he died with grass coming out of his mouth. My beloved German Shepherd has since passed and is now buried next to him, they were buddies. :'(

i am always amazed that people feel the need to ask if roaching is the answer. roaching is never the answer. never. not even if your horse's mane is on fire and the only way to put it out is to cut it off. it'd look better singed off from an out of control fire than from being roached. the end.
