The horses are taught to rub the cross country fences. Less time in the air saves time. Go to any upper level event. Most of the horses rub a lot of the jumps. That is why there are so many rails pulled in stadium.

Um, you really don't event, do you?

I was going to say the same thing. The grease is to help the horse slither over a jump, should they run into problems. You always hope they wont touch a single fence, but things happen, and grease minimizes the likelihood of of a fall, and minimizes injuries to the horse if he should catch a stifle or something. They are most certainly not taught to rub the fences.

So many rails come down the next day because the horses just ran a cross country course, and are tired and stiff.
