I think it all depends on the quality of both mare and stallion, then if thier conformation compliments each other. I use to look at Friesian Paint crosses... Ok the Halter horse low headset, stocky mares generally crosses to have little fuglies... however mares that had a lot of TB influence, high headset, lighter body, crossed to have much nicer foals. Though it is very hard to put color on a Friesian. Most were solid, or minamal tobiano.

Like others say, someone gets a hold of a low end Friesian Stallion and because he's a Friesan he's wonderful breeding horse and he'll cross nicely with any mare. I see this with the Vanners too, who I've seen some really nice well thoughtout crosses... But I see bucket loads of fuglies.
