Interestingly, in the horsepital (god I crack myself up) very recenty there was a mare in to be spayed. She came in in the morning, they clipped both of her sides, she had a short surgury, and then was done. She had one TINY incision on each side of the flank - not even big enough for a couple fingers it looked like. She had laproscopic surgury, where they use a remotely operated scope and camera, making it minimally invasive. It was very fast and she was normal by the time I left work, and was able to go home either the next day or the day after that. This type of surgury has little recovery time, I'm pretty sure is less expensive, and rarely has side effects such as colics. However, I don't think it is an option at a lot of places. If you were to look into it, I would try a university or big equine clinic.
