Ropinreins, I think you greatly missed the point of my post.. that's ok though. It's a message board and I know that so much can be lost through typed words.
I wasn't saying that "hunters are elitist!" in the spirit of vindictiveness, jealousy, or even contempt. I rather enjoy spending time in the hunter world. I don't compete in it, but I can usually find the high points in any situation or environment. I was just commenting on what I've experienced (elitism) as well as a social phenomena (elitism). IveGotRythmn recapped a great part of my thoughts succinctly: elitism (because of it's social nature) is upheld by the 'society' of hunter jumpers. Sure, some judges may be so ingrained in that society that they feel the need to enforce it, and some might not. The society of the serious hunters will enforce it though, and they will enforce it in the best and most effective way - through social mechanisms such as embarrassment or exclusion.
Elitism is a product of society.. that could be a pun... I don't mean society as in 'the rich', but rather as in a group of people interacting. It is not exclusive to the world of hunters and can be found in other segments of the horse industry - perhaps this is because riding is, regardless of an individual's socio-economic classification, a LUXURY. Therefore, the door stands wide open to elitism, among other things. Really, you can find it (or again, a number of other social occurrences) anywhere where there is a need to differentiate.
In regards to HP. I was not 'attacking' her in any way, shape, or form. I was discussing the role of the hunter world on young people. Young people are inherently malleable, and they will nearly always gravitate towards some stability in equal proportion to instability. Sometimes this stability is 'perceived', such as in the acquisition of 'bad friends' and drugs, sometimes it is good - perhaps a grandparent or family-like figure, and sometimes it is neither - maybe a person who is caring but not always setting the best example. I would argue that this occurs very often in the world of hunters. I was a teen who was dealing with a very unstable home environment. I was also smart, knew 'right from wrong', and kept myself out of trouble. I needed some stability though, so I threw myself into riding and latched on to those whom I idolized. Fortunately (in my opinion), they were traditionalists and are greatly responsible for shaping my view of riding today. HP seems to feel very strongly about the world she is part of. She's not lived long enough to have formed most of those opinions through trial and error or serious 'engagement of the world'. It is highly likely that she was exposed to these opinions and then saw them reinforced by the group she feels so strongly about. That is why she expresses herself in her characteristic manner on the internet. In all honesty, I was hoping to have perhaps softened the perception of her 'internet personality' by suggesting this. As I stated before, I feel that the adolescents and young adults of the hunter jumper world are products of the teachings of their elders... they are partly responsible for the choices they make, but due to the malleable nature of their youth, they can't be held fully responsible until they have lived a little longer.
