Yeah, a fairly well known breeder in Nor Calif bought her stud as a weanling with an injury. The breeder was told that the scar would grow in white. It didn't. So, the current owner (I think, I had heard she sold him to someone in TX) bought him and started breeding him to off breed mares. She told me once that her main criteria in a mare was 'nothing over 500, usually from the local paper'. She then got into Gypsy Vanners. She also told me that she'd breed them to spotted drafts and still sell them as GV's. The weanlings sold in the late 90's/early 2000's for 5 to 6.5 grand. I don't think they bring in that much with the current market and she cut back on the Friesian X market once it got flooded. But she still sells GVs and they start at 10 grand for a weanling. People are hot for a 'trend' and will do anything to be a part of it. Many of the crosses, in my opinion, end up looking like a larger version of their dam. I do agree though that Flying W has put out some really really nice horses. Sonnet is an example. That's where he's from, right?
