Oh, hell, I completely forgot this one. But Beeze's story reminded me.
Back when I was about 17/18, I was involved in a chatroom devoted to a particular show I was a huge fan of (Highlander.
). At some point, a lot of the chatting devolved into just a few of us roleplaying out stories with various characters who may or may not have been related to the show. At that point, it really only was like, three or four of us typically there and we had to entertain ourselves somehow.
Well, this one girl (she was actually married with kids at the time, so not a girl but, uh, anyway) brought in this one (male) character. My character took a liking to him and what followed was a very long drawn out relationship thing that ended in a hell of a lot of drama. Because the girl in question couldn't "control" her character, she could only bring him in when "he" felt like it (which sounds really weird until you actually hear writers talk about their characters like they were real people). It was still weird, but you know, you just smile and nod and move on.
Now, some of the RP happened when I wasn't around but was going to affect my character, so I asked another of the girls to send me a copy of their chat log so I could get caught up. Read through, la dee da, but she forgot at the end to snip off some personal stuff between them that basically made it sound like they hated RPing with me and had been hiding some big secret this whole time that I didn't really understand.
Needless to say, I'd felt punched in the gut because they'd been nothing but nice to my "face". I dwelled on it for a day or two before I finally sent some email that said, "hey, you forgot to take this off the end of the chat log and you know if you guys don't like me so much, it woulda been easier for everybody involved if you'd just said so to my face and then I wouldn't have bugged you" and so on.
So then the truth came out that I'd completely misinterpreted what they were talking about (and I had) and the big secret? That male character one of the girls couldn't control? He was actually her
husband
who had wanted to get involved and see what his wife was doing all the time on the computer. She'd been afraid we'd all be weirded out if we found out it wasn't actually her so just hadn't said anything and things went on for ages (this happened over a timespan of months, at least). I was actually the last to find out, I don't recall how the others did.
So anyway, basic gist: RP group, new character shows up, plays in a relationship with one of my characters for ages (and at the time I was still young enough to really identify with my characters and let the fictional emotional stuff get to me, I'm better at separating them out now), turns out to actually not be played by my friend but her husband and they had been keeping it a secret for ages.
Upshot is I'm still friends with the girl, but we just sort of don't talk about all that old craziness.
If this made no sense, don't mind me, it's been years and I'm dredging it all out of memory so it's not as coherent as one might hope.
