Is hubby a good rider and a "horse person" or is he a typical horse lover hubby which means he does horse things because you do? Do you ride a lot - like trails? I'm saying this because I know far too many men who get turned off on riding because their wife chooses their horse and quite frankly she chooses a horse she likes, not one really suited for him. I take it he's large. Is he athletic? If not you might consider a Haflinger. I have a horizontally enhanced friend who rides one and totally loves him. There are other shorter but strong and stocky breeds including true foundation QH's When I was a kid foundation QH's were 13 2 and could carry anything. They were all muscles, good bone, good feet and short legs. Afterall - cowboys had to ride and get on and off all the time so they liked short horses.
TW's are sweet and there are some that aren't too tall and they have the added advantage of a nice gait IF you get an old style from a breeder who still breeds them for trail. Avoid the show breeders in most cases.
Rockies are another stout gaited breed but again you want WELL TRAINED and laid back. There are paso finos that are 15 2, laid back, smooth as silk and great as a hubby horse also. All of these can be shown allbreed. We know because we do it ourselves and we are old and decrepit and we do hunter paces on gaited horses and speed shows.
There are TONS of good QH,TW, paso fino, Rocky, Missouri Foxtrotter and even some smaller stocky apps and haflingers on the east coast. Drop me a PM if you want more info on available horses in the southeast because we know a lot of horse people and a number of brokers that are still in business and that we have used over and over with very good luck. How much does hubby weigh? And how tall is he? We do not have anything for sale but to give you an idea a guest who is 6 6 and weighs 265 rode our 14 hand 925 pound very sturdy paso fino mare with no problems. No I wouldn't send her on a trail ride with him but big people need strong, big boned, muscular, strong back, strong suspensory horses, not tall horses.
He must have been a beautiful baby
Cause baby just look at him now!
