Last year, my two 16 year old cats were living with my ex. Rather one was his one mine. We made the decision not to separate them as they were litter mates, and he had the 3 floor, large house they had grown up in, so they stayed there. I am about 4 hours away, relocated with my job, and didn't have ideal conditions for them at the time.

The Seal always had health issues and had deformed kidneys since birth. She got sick he took her to the vet. He insisted on heroic efforts to save her life which were more like tortures on hindsight. She spent her last week in the vet's office. Hooked up to various tubes. With strangers. When I got there to see her, I begged him to let her go. He refused. He said I was playing God. How could I give up on her. How could I do that to her. I was a monster. She was not at our regualr vet, but still at the emergency vet he had taken her to, and he was her owner of record. I had no say.
Finally, the next freaking day, the vet admited to him they couldn't save her. He relented and I finally brought her home to bury her on my farm.

The seal was always my cat, Tigger his. Last winter we found out Tigger had the same deformed kidneys. He sold the house and Tigger came to live with me.

Tigger will not go through what The Seal did. She will go while she is still happy and pain free. She will go out woth the dignity she deserves. She has started to go down hill and will not suffer not one single bit. I have made arrangements with a vet to come to our home for it, as a car ride to the vet is torture for her spoiled little butt. Thank God for the at home vet.

I would say that Jason is the monster, not you, but he is just not aware of the ignorance of his remarks and opinion. You know what is right and are strong enough to do it, lucky for Chance.
