From a mourning standpoint, it's not necessarily too soon. When our boxer died I would have been out looking at dogs the next day but the rest of the family was in no condition to do so. People mourn differently and for some it's easier to recognize that getting another dog after one has died is not replacing the previous dog any more than having a second child is replacing the first. When an animal is truly a part of your family, there's no such thing as "replacing" it in your heart, there's room enough in there for many, many animals.

Be sure when you visit rescues that you let them know about the kids. Some places won't adopt out to families with young children.
