I have never cleaned a sheath, and thats in my 11 years of owning geldings. Frost's stank, but then, it was rotting away with cancer. Bob's looks clean as a whistle when he is feeling outgoing enough to drop it more than 2 inches. And I have yet to see AJs. I have never noticed a smell about either one. Im of the belief that most horses dont even need it done, though I do know of some exceptions. Those parts of the body are designed to be self cleaning and have a balanced little world of bacteria in there, I wouldnt want to throw it out of whack trying to fix something that isnt broke. I stick the hose up there when I wash down after work in the summer, to get the sweat out. Thats it. Of course, there are dirty geldings and mares who apparently havent been gifted with naturally self cleaning naughty parts. Im sure breeding horses might require some sort of, you know, wash out after as well. Sex is dirty business.
Is there a correlation in terms of skin colour? The dirty gelding I know has a pink wink haha. He gets done twice a year, and he is nasty.
