If you DO have ABS, do NOT pump the brakes. You can't possibly pump faster than the computer can, so just stick to it. ABS 'feels' when you're about to skid, and let's pressure off that tire. It checks like 100/second.

Go to a parking lot with someone who does know how to drive in the snow and have them teach you how to countersteer. You know in the movie Cars when he says 'turn right to go left'? That is the concept. The physics behind it is that all 4 of your car's wheels want to be lined up with each other. If the back end of your car starts to slide to the left, TURN YOUR WHEEL LEFT and the back end will go right.

Also...if you start sliding in a front wheel drive car...for the love of God, DON'T let off the gas. Because your front wheels are your drive wheels, they create drag. If the front wheels have more drag than the rear wheels, you will start doing spinning. In a rearwheel drive car, you don't have to worry about that as much, but you should still stay on the gas a bit and countersteer.

Don't overcorrect, little adjustments do fine.

But really, grab a 4 wheel drive something and go do doughtnuts. It's the easiest way to learn. And it's FUN!
