you dont need to leave bottle in his pen- he needs to be worked on the ground something to this extent.
example, for trailering
* lunge him near the trailer (if possibly, back it up to and open gate in your arena, or bring it IN your arena)
* lunge him till he stops looking at the open trailer as if it is going to eat him up
* when you stop, to let him rest, have him stop near the trailer. if he wants to investigate, let him!
* as soon as he shows distaste about it, begin lunging him again
he'll soon learn that he doesnt WANT to be lunge, and that to rest he has to be near the trailer. after awhile, when you stop him, as him to come closer to the trailer, let him investigate, and as soon as he pulls backs, spooks, snorts, looks at it weird, is goosy... start lunging again.
soon he will learn the trailer means no worky, and will want to be near it... this drill usually takes about 1 hour a day for about 3-4 days, depending on your horses stubborness,
the result will be him willing getting in the trailer without even a flick of an eye... my mom had a horse so good at this (he would do ANYTHING to NOT go in the trailer, lay down, wrap himself around the side of the trailer, or just plant his feet)
well the result was my mom could lead him to the other side of the arena, my mom saying "Rockie, load" and he'd literally run as fast as he could, and leap into the trailer xD we had to stop that or he'd hurt himself... but you get the point- He WANTED to be in the trailer, and enjoyed it greatly. .
and get this
Rockie has NOT been in a trailer for over 4 years, about 3 months ago his owner trail rode him down to the local arena at a show, to see us, we were standing near the back of the trailer, taylor let his lead loose and rockie leaped into the trailer, slide himself into the slot, and stood there, waiting for us to lock him in. so we did!! xD and just left him int he trailer, and let him hang his head out, he was happy as a clam xD
