The mare I was going to take ona 2 year lease HATES the stallion they have been trying to run her with to get in foal. She will literally try to kill him when he approaches- even when she is in full heat. This same mare loves my stallion and will practically climp into his lap and purr. A friend's stallion broke down her gate to go after a mare two pastures over- who fought him tooth and nail (literally) while he tried to breed her.

Some mares refuse to accept a stallion they dislike or don't want to deal with. Some mares just want nothing to do with stallions, period. And some mares KNOW when a stallion is not "right" for them and will do their damnedest not to be bred by them.

They have personalities and pretty good instincts- if my mare hates a stallion, no matter how much I like him- we aren't breeding to him. I will NOT allow someone to hobble my mares for breeding, ever. I've seen too many broodmares who had horrible, nasty injuries from the hobbles.
Usually they were mares who were done with foals and didn't want anymore- and actively protested being a baby machine. In several cases, after the mare foaled, she would just walk away from the baby- or savage it if it got too close.

There is NO reason to breed a mare until she goes sour, really. Regardless of how nice she is or how badly you want that last foal- if the mare isn't on board- just give it up, mmkay?
