I do believe that stallions can "rape" mares, although I don't necessarily think that hobbling a mare should be considered rape (infact, the thought never crossed my mind before).
My breeder friend had a really nice App stud that was actually turned out with some older mares and geldings when he was younger, 24/7, he was really respectful when the mares told him to back off. One night SOMEHOW he managed to get out and get in with her QH stud (honestly, no idea how, post/rail AND 3 strands of electric... maybe the fence shorted out?). He really beat up the QH pretty good and it seemed like after that night he realised just how big and strong he was. He just started getting more and more aggressive.
It got the the point that he was being VERY aggressive while breeding, excessive biting, really rearing up and slaming himself down on the mares while mounting etc. Breeder used to pasture breed, but it got to the point where he would get aggressive with the mares and they would decide that "hey buddy, I'm not in the mood anymore" he actually would chase them down and "rape" them. Just chase them down until they were well-winded
and then jump aboard.
Hard to say really, I guess it is hard to call it rape when refering to animals, but I've never seen anything like this. The mares were scared of him, although they were in full heat he would be so rough, ignoring all warning signs from them and they would end up trying to run away.
Needless to say he was gelded shortly after it became evident that this was a problem that was not going to go away. This occured when he really hit maturity (6) so its likely that it had absolutely nothing to do with the fight with the QH stud, but everything to do with hormone levels.
Either way. Thats my only experience with what I would call "equine rape" :P
