The first person who approached one of my horses with a twitch would get hurt. By me. I have NEVER had to twitch a mare or stallion or gelding in my care, for anything. Stitch up nasty wounds- no problem. Worming them, tubing them, vaccinations, feet, abcesses, etc- I have NEVER had to use anything other than their training and a lead rope. I don't even use stud chains on anything I own.

I understand, when the stallion is that valuable, the need for precautions. Fine- take the time to train the mare to the hobbles- but don't slap a twitch and hobbles on a mare who has never seen them before. I saw some of our mares come back with scars, injuries, and some really horrible and nasty issues after being sent out for breeding- like the sweet, in-your-pocket mare who came back so headshy she would flip herself over backwards if you went to halter her. It took me months to get her back to being the mare who would come lay her head on my shoulder and beg for scritches.
