Good questions, Grassland!
As far as Impressive and Poco Bueno go... they've made a lot of people very rich. While I like both of the lines for different reasons, I think it's high time folks stopped seeing what lines their pockets and take a good long look at the big picture.
HERDA can be dealt with like OLWS, since the carriers (so far, at least) have been found to be unaffected.
HYPP requires more finesse, and I DO believe that now, at this point in time, we have enough truly GREAT HYPP N/N stock that the folks that breed halter animals will not be sacrificing the quality of their breeding programs by breeding N/N only. But it's not the easy way out, since many people's broodmare bands are FULL of N/H mares, or their stallion is N/H, and who wants to take a loss like cutting 1/2 your broodmares or your stallion?
Hate the CK Kid types. Hate the Kids Classic Style types. Hate the fitting practices that screw up halter horses feet, hate that they breed FOR no-withers and a flat-as-a-board topline with posthocks and enormously deep heartgirths. Other than that, I don't mind halter horses overmuch.
A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep.
