I found out why he is so thin. The previous owner was his jockey when he was running. Her dad owned several stalls at the track and let her keep him there until she found him a home. A few months of a horse not running or making money and the dad decided not to feed him well while he waited for a home. Apparently someone also cashed in his life insurance policy and therefore he has no papers. My friend (his new owner) would really like to get papers on him just to have them - if she went and tried for them would someone be in deep trouble? Not that she cares, I think its a waste of a horse to sell him without papers. This guy made them a lot of money, Stakes Winner + Life Insurace = Sold for $500.00, its a shame what people do to these horses.
He's currently on 2 flakes alfalfa x 2 daily plus 20lbs of cooked oats and corn in the evening, full access to salt of course and loads of treats from everyone. My friend also bought him a flock of chickens for his stall, so he has 6 little barred rock chickies running around with him, they even roost on him! He's a little food aggressive but *duh* he is very hungry so we figure that will pass after hes gained his weight. My friend has also taken him trail riding in a snaffle bit and he does great with Dulce even though shes scared of him when they're turned out. He also got new shoes to repair a crack he had in his foot.
All in all he's doing well, thanks for all the comments about him. His new owner thinks it was a birth defect on his neck as she heard his dam was pretty small. But I guess we'll never know without papers!! Unless anyone has TB look up for "MISTER MAYER" not with an O.
