As you know, they are still growing rapidly even as yearlings. If fed properly & not overly fed for fat, like some halter people practice, they should be fine shown either as weanlings or yearlings.:)

Since, I'm wasn't sure on your training methods, I didn't know what you meant. Some people do start yearlings, look at Easy Jet. But it's not my practice either. As they're still growing till the age of 6 & some breeds the age of 7 till full maturity.
