Beeze--there's a way you can set up hotwire fence so it won't ground out like that. It involves putting a 'ground' wire as part of the fence, next to the 'hot' one. Horse hits the two wiires together, and HE becomes the ground-ZAP! Instructions for how to do it are (somewhere) on Zareba's web site.

Will have to keep that in mind when we redo fence this spring. B respects well marked fence but when the snow is up over it, well.... That was the biggest problem this year, Eastern Canada got SO MUCH snow that it was OVER our four foot fence posts in a lot of places, and this mare has absolutely NO qualms about wading through snow up to her chest, and climbing snowbanks to come and find me. I want to re-do everything with six foot posts this year, but we'll have to see if we can find it... and if I can start making some money, I also want to do our main paddock (where everyone is kind of "corralled" for the winter) in board with a lining hot wire... that way it will work well for stallion turnout as well.
