My new mare appears to work well in a big ol' pacifier loose ring snaffle and we decided to keep her in it for jumping (previous owner ran her in a double twisted wire *cringe*). My trainer highly suggested the guards because she witnessed a loose ring get pulled through a horse's mouth during a jump off. Not only did it pinch, but it cut the side of the mouth and tongue.

How did you get them off? I honestly don't know how I will be able to get them off, barring cutting. So here's hoping they work!

Off seemed to be much easier. But you could have larger rings than I did too. It's a little late now....but they make slip on ones that latch on now. image

Loose ring pulled through the mouth?? That's definitely a "don't believe it till I see it" kind of event. Freaky. But they definitely can't hurt to have on either way. Unless they cause sweat around the lips and chaffing, which I have seen.

Happened to me, once. I was totally green, maybe ridding 10 times, rode a 18 yo knabstrupper mare with foal at home, never really been trained or anything, just allowed people to ride her. I did not adjust the bridle but just hopped on when the owner ensured me everything was allright. After maybe 30 mins the mare turns around to go home to her foal, and I sit on top trying to turn her - with the bit, how would I know not to. Suddenly I look down and the whole loose ring snaffle bit is on the right side of the horses head! Through the mouth! It was freaky and I felt soooo bad. So yes, it can happen, but I was hauling, really hauling on this old stubborn broodies face, so it takes a lot for it to happen. (and I still feel bad about it, it taught me a lesson)
