I'm totally against declawing myself. I have had 3 happily clawed cats and NO furniture accidents. I have one little cheapo scratching post and 1 pretty circular one in the living room. I put their daily catnip on the post so it's obviously their most favoritest piece of furniture and they keep their scratching to just there. They get their nails clipped maybe 1 or 2 times a month.

I'm happy knowing they can defend themselves against my dogs in play too. My dogs wouldn't mean to hurt, but they need to be told when they've crossed the line and a swipe to the nose will achieve that.

I will never adopt an already declawed cat either as a rule. Not fair with all the other animals they are interacting with having them.

Oh...my cats did manage to destroy a chair when living with my parents while I was at college. Why their furniture and never mine? Availability of scratching posts (my mom thought they were ugly and hid them so the cats never used them), lack of toys (also hidden cause they were a "nuissance"), and complete lack of discipline. Simple as that. I mean, I lived with these SAME 2 cats for years with absolutely no issues.
