I try not to let to much slide in the way of manners. I have mares, and mine are smart enough to know if you give an inch they will take a mile. Besides I'm all about discipline. Y'all know that already. Whoa means whoa =)
No seriously we have kids out for lessons from time to time, I'd rather know my horses aren't going to knock a 5 year old over by trying to rub their head on them or something to that effect. I really try not to let things slide in the way of manners. Riding too though, I don't tend to let things slide. If I'm out on a trail ride or something, well maybe but still some things I'm super strict with. No grazing while working or trail riding. No shoulder dropping on corners while working or trail riding. Hold your frame at all times because I'm not holding it for you, or asking more than twice. Out on trails I'm less concerned about drive and collection of course, I'm more lax if you will in that department. For the most part though, ground work, sms, halter, grooming, ring work, training and trail riding I tend to be consistent with everything. I think it's better for your horse in the long run. That way they know what is expected at all times, not just some of the time.
As a fun thing though, I have one that says yes for a cookie, when we are all done with working. And one that gives kisses, but also only when we are done working. These are both only when prompted they are not aloud to ask first. So see, I'm not some big bad strict ruler carrying catholic schoolteacher =)
