I dump out and wash out my water buckets every day. My mare won't drink water with dust, hay or anything in it. Once a week, I have to chlorox the buckets so they don't have any "smell." Pain in the butt ... but you gotta do what you gotta do. Good job on noticing the issue!

ETA: I'm the only person at my barn with two water buckets. Everyone else has a huge trough in their runout with an automatic waterer. They can't monitor the horse's water intake ... I always wonder: how do they know when their horse is on the verge of colic or other symptom? Plus, how do they know if their water has spoiled?
