To keep them clean I would just get a bucket of water and rinse them out when I cooled off my horse. Dip and shake dip and shake. i didnt do that daily of course maybe weekly or when I thought of it. Then Once a month or so when I washed the horse I would just put them in the bottom of my soap bucket and let them soak for a while then rinse after I rinsed the horse, hang to dry. If you get a chestnut or bay type color you can go longer between washing. I would stay away from lighter colors because they can stain. I never used them for show they were my everyday reins. Properly braided horse hair reins in my opinion are not scratchy to the hand.
