I agree, terrible parenting. When my kids used cribs, they were always in there with the door shut, and we made sure no dogs and no cat (I heard some story about a baby being suffocated by a cat sleeping on it's face once, lol) are in there before shutting the door.

That said, I imagine the dog will be euthanized. Honestly, I think that's best (flame away) given that even if they find a new home for this dog, there is no guarantee it won't one day end up with another family with a baby. There are too many good, reliable, safe dogs available to take the risk of keeping a dog with dangerous behaviors (note I said behaviors, I don't see it as an attack either, but more like the dog was playing with the baby) around.

I can understand it from the dog's point of view though. My dogs have this toy that when they bite it, makes a sound almost like a baby's cry. He was probably confused, not properly introduced to the baby when it came home...etc. I have always thought introductions are important. We would let the dogs meet the baby in a controlled setting, sniff all over and see what it is, and if there is going to be any jumping or growling, swift punishment immediately so there are clear baby boundaries set.
