I love my cotton reins and my braided mohair reins. The mohair was a present, and they've held up well and are super soft. They're spendy, though, the cheapest I've seen online is $70.

If you want cheaper, get some cotton reins. You can get split or roping style, and they're usually called "training reins". They're also really soft, and you can toss them in the washer or simply swish them around in a bucket.

I'd steer clear of the horse hair reins, a good pair is expensive and they are really for training and showing. They are super scratchy, and do you really think your horse is going to like the rough scratchy rein laying on her neck over miles and miles of trail?
