All I can give is what my low-palate horse found tolerable. I don't show and I'm never selling, so going bitless wasn't a big deal. I know it's not lack of training on my horse's part b/c she goes very well in just about anything that doesn't require metal in her mouth.
Thanks for the input, I do appreciate it, especially coming from someone who has a horse whose mouth shape is similar to my mare's.
