This is so much more than I ever expected!
So, another question: any tips for or has anyone ever roomed with an upperclassman as a freshman? My roommate is a junior, for housing reasons that I still have not quite figured out.

It happens. If most upperclassmen at your school live off-campus, in a sorority/fraternity, etc. it stands to reason that the junior choices for roommates disappear quickly. I'd consider an older roommate a good thing. Most likely, upperclassmen living in the dorms (if everyone else is living out of them) tend to be good students. They already have their area of study, have friends, etc. It will force you to get out of your room to make friends of your own. They probably won't be up all hours partying, and will be gone from the room much of the time. Plus, if you have questions about what professors to avoid, which summer class is the best, and where it town to go for pizza, they can help you out. They're probably more worried about rooming with a freshman than you are about rooming with a junior. Be polite, considerate, and you should be fine.

Can you contact your roommate ahead of time? Some schools will give you contact information. This is useful. Find out if you need a loft for your bed, who is bringing the TV, etc.
