I think a lot of stuff depends on the kind of person you are. I lived in a party dorm, on the party floor, went to parties, drank stuff out of garbage pails (yukaflux, jungle juice, what have you), lived with my best friend, and managed to come out not only alive, but with a 3.85 GPA, and still best friends with my BFF/roomie. I actually spent a lot of time in my childhood bestfriend's room. He had a single and I used to ocassionaly sleep there, when my roomie had a boy over. And she started dating a guy who lived off campus about halfway through the year. If we hadn't had our own places to go, I don't think it would have worked out as well as it did. Anyway, this is my advice, but I'm a partier, not really a studier, lol. I thrive in chaos.

A mini-fridge is a godsend. Seriously, get one. You will not regret it. As well as a microwave. I also had a TV and a PS2, no cable in my room, but I could watch movies in my down time. Also, a memory foam to cover your matress. Dorm beds are not comfortable, lol. If you're getting presents, for Christmas, or your Birthday, ask for a Wal-mart or Target gift card, they're great. Don't bring all of your clothes. I went home once a month, and so I rotated my clothes, I'd take some home, and bring new ones. You just don't have enough space for your entire wardrobe, or I didn't. Make friends with your RAs, and if you have them, security gaurds. I knew every security gaurd by their first name, and knew a little bit about their lives. It really helps, because when you forget your keys, or your ID, they know you. Don't be scared to talk to people. They're probably all just as nervous as you, but that first week is where you really make friends. We left our door open pretty much all year, unless we were changing or sleeping.

Rez is good, to get your bearings, and make friends. I enjoyed it, but it's not something I'll repeat. I'm living off campus this year, on a farm. I feel much more at home there then I ever did in rez. I just prefer to be out in the open if I can, lol.

Photobucket life ain't always beautiful, but it's a beautiful ride
