Getting, also check out the other thread on trailering issues with me and another poster.
Both of our problems stemmed from horses that didn't actually lead properly and had learned to be little drama queens about loading. I thought pishposh! my horse knows how to lead. So, I did a refresher leading course (as if I would train a foal) and then walked her right into the large slant load! No issues whatsoever.
But my mare also has issues with confinement and has tried to climb the divider. So, I loaded her several times, put up a bucket of her food and then closed her in the dividers. It took her about 2 feedings to be relaxed with the confinement. Then, I repeated with smaller and darker horse trailers.
In less than a week, my mare hops into straight loads perfectly and allows me to put up the butt bar with out her freaking out! (I'll probably eat those words later today)
Thanks to the many suggestions of the people who helped me!
I know how frustrating it can be. But if you devote some time and energy to it and keep positive (quit if you are feeling frustrated) it will change. I know my horse isn't "cured" but I feel better knowing that she won't through a fit before getting on or once on (we'll see how the 5 hour trailer ride goes tomorrow).
Also, my mare was once a self loader too and had a series of bad instances. Turns out, she was just a little spooked and needed to be lead in -- once we got her leading correctly, she only hesitates a little (then I back her off and then reload ... perfect!)
