The mules go barefoot. I will keep them barefoot for as long as possible. If I happen to move somewhere where the terrain demands shoes, then I would consider it. But I have already ridden in extremely rocky areas with out problems.

I have nothing against shoes, but I feel they are over used. My barn is primarily weekend riders, if that. All the horses, except one, have front shoes. They don't do anything but go out to pasture during the day and maybe a trail ride once a month if that. I think they all could have their shoes pulled and be perfectly fine. But the owners keep their shoes on.

Shoes seem so constrictive... I dunno. I guess I'm so used to the mules going barefoot and having excellent footing/traction that it hasn't been a problem. However, if shoes are necessary for medical reasons, then go for it.

Did your mare always have to wear shoes, or were they temporary until her feet got better?
