I think if a horse can go barefoot, that is great. Most of ours have shoes in the show season and, if they ok without them, barefoot during the off season. Barefoot is better in the snow anyhow. Our horses are in mid to heavy work 12 months a year, so it isn't really a usage-related issue. They just cannot get ouchy during the show season (vs the winter, where they can get a good break when ouchy without interfering with any events).
