I dislike laziness in a horse. I like firecrackers much, much more than mopey slowsters. I'll take a bolting, fidgety, strong-willed mare over my friends' lazy geldings any day - I can deal with bolts, I can stay on for rears, I think a little crow-hop from joy is funny (and a crow-hop from pain something to check out), but I cannot fix laziness, and I refuse to lash a horse through a ride. I shouldn't have to kick and squeeze and cluck to get that animal moving; I shouldn't have to depend on a crop to get from point A to point B. I want the trot and canter animated, full of impulsion, and powerful. I want a gallop to be a damn gallop. I've met my share of both Western and English horses who are couch potatoes. They wouldn't move if you lit a fire under their tail.
