It's 15 1/2 inches from knot to knot. Also I wrap a few wraps of baling wire & then black tape the middle of the nose band for horses that aren't real nose sensitive. I ride my stud in the rolled & taped like is shown in the pics. But on a green or just being broke horse you don't need any wire or wrap usually. They will let you know if it's too severe as their head will go up some when you pull back to whoa them & they will act like it's too strong. Lots of folks will wrap a bosal in the middle too when breaking colts, so it works the same way.

The nose band I like best to use is one made out of an old roping rope. They're stiffer & make a horse respect them more. And it can get a horse's nose sore in itself, so you may need to wrap the plain nose band with tape if you use the stout roping rope for the nose band.
