I haven't found anything that helps with hair growth. I just shave.
Low carb is best, in my experience, but it only takes you so far. You have to be really really strict about it!
The polycystic ovaries are actually technically another symptom, though they exacerbate a lot of the issues that come with PCOS. It's an endocrine issue, though there is still so much that needs to be learned. First they focused on the infertility aspect, and the medical community overall has been a little slow to catch up with the other issues, some of which are pretty scary risks.
Oh! Hey, cinnamon. I'm told cinnamon helps a bit.
Metformin made me perpetually violently ill and didn't help with my symptoms, but I'm just unlucky there. I hear it does help a lot of people, so do ask about it!
Ovarian drilling is an extreme option, though it only really helps with fertility and getting a more regular cycle. I had it done because I had insurance at the time, the doctor was hoping it'd do some good, and what the heck, he was in there tying my tubes anyway. It did give me a regular period for about 6 months.
With PCOS, you really need to avoid sugar, starch, even grains. Fiber is important, of course, and leafy greens, but also it's important to get a lot of protein, and a fair amount of fat as well. I know it seems counter-intuitive to people with normal bodies, but it is what specialists have told me time and time again, and it is what has worked for me.
I know I personally will never be skinny. Even working out really really hardcore (can't do that any more anyway, heh!) and eating a very strict diet, I can't get below 180. But oh well. I can get really healthy, and that's the important part.
The only time I recommend birth control (i.e. a massive influx of hormones) is when you are hemorrhaging heavily for weeks. Yam-based progesterone, taken long enough to get the bleeding to stop, is a good idea. A low-carb diet will help a lot with getting a regular period. It's also important ot eat plenty on said low carb diet *kicks self a lot* or your metabolism will get more screwed up. :/
For acne, if that is an issue with you, doxycycline helps, and as an added bonus, it's what they use to treat lyme disease, so if you are around horses in an area with ticks, yay protection!
Hidradenitis suppurativa, or Fox-Den Disease, has no cure, and is not caused by bacteria or a virus. Hopefully you don't have to deal with this, it sucks a lot.
There are blood tests you can take to check for PCOS. It's a good idea to get tested for thyroid issues and diabetes as well. With thyroid issues, don't let them give you a vauge "normal parameters" answer.... you can be within "normal" parameters and still need thyroid meds.
An ultrasound can show you the state of your ovaries. I really hate ultrasounds, but they make things pretty clear.
Other things to watch out for with PCOS, that you should try to get screened for every couple of years are endometriosis and endometrial cancer. I don't think it's THAT common though, to get this because of PCOS. It is an increased risk, however.
Finally, be prepared to deal with a lot of ignorant tools who will claim that PCOS is an "excuse" for your body doing the things that it does. They are ignorant and don't listen to them- only you know that you are doing the best you can to be healthy and take good care of yourself.
Talk to Eagle View Arabians. She knows about PCOS, and is a medical health professional.
