What on earth does sitting do to show your lack of support? Even if you don't agree with parts of your countries policies, you need to support it as a whole, for what it is: CHANGING. Countries, laws, etc are always morphing into what the public wants (or thinks they want). The Pledge doesn't say "I like this country the way it is, and don't ever want anything different." It says that you support your country.

EVERY one should be able to stomach that.

I'm not american, we don't do the pledge.
So in my case it was singing Oh Canada. An annoyingly patriotic song.
The custom in canadian classrooms (at least on the westcoast)is to stand and either sing or listen, depending on the school, to the national anthem at least once a week. Doing so shows that you are proud to be canadian/that you support canada/that you will 'stand on guard for [the nation state]'
I am not, I don't and I won't.
Ergo, I sit.
