I'd tell him you're worried you're going to lose a terrific farrier when he retires. Ask him when he plans on retiring. Tell him that a few months before he retires, you'd like him to work with/talk to the other farrier, so that he can give her info about your horse.

Very, very silly to give up a good farrier. I've known a bunch of people who have done that to save a few bucks and have really, really regretted it. (especially if old farrier is too busy / too offended to take you back as a client once you decide you've made a bad decision.)

It's very likely that I did NOT read all the comments before replying. Deal with it.
