Hey Crazy, I know what you mean about them eating their bedding, we had a mare that did that several years ago at my barn. I think it was a nervous or bored thing. Her owner had just bought her with the intention of showing, and kept her stalled most of the time; up til that time, the mare had been turned out mostly, but she colicked twice, and both times we found her with a mouth * full * of pine shavings, laying in the stall moaning. Last I heard, she gave the mare away to someone that could leave it out 24/7, and the mare was fine.

I really don't think that is what happened in my case, though, because he had hay in his stall, and I have never seen him do it, but hey, that doesn't mean it didn't happen! They are experts at hurting themselves! I really think that due to a big drop in temp, he didn't drink enough water, and due to being inside and not moving around much, he was not able to keep things moving in his gut.
