I too am pretty wary of horses I don't know. I prefer to spend a week or so on the ground with a new horse getting to know it before riding. I want to know what buttons that horse has, what its spooks are, etc.

Now with my horses that I have had for a while and worked with, I am completely comfortable with them. I am cautious when entering into a new situation with them, or if we are in a situation that I know might push a button or something. But, I am not afraid of them at all.

One situation that always makes me nervous is being in a herd situation. I am always VERY cautious when moving around two or more horses, especially while they are eating. lol I just feel that the herd dynamics tend to be stronger than their ability to pay attention to where I am and make sure not to run into me or something. I am always watching what is going on between the horses while I am in a herd situation, and I am always making my presence known because after-all, I AM the alpha mare and they have to do what I say.

Discussion is the exchange of intelligence...
Argument is the exchange of ignorance.
